Chapter 5: PROCESSING PAPERWORK

The bail bond business is driven by information and documentation. Your success as a bail agent depends to a large degree on your ability to manage paperwork and on your ability to follow up on important files. If you let paperwork slide or you let work pile up you will run into problems.

When you open a new client file, that file remains open until the defendant’s court case is resolved. That can take months and sometimes years. Meanwhile, the defendant is out on bail and, if you don’t keep track of him, six months down the road he might fail to show up in court. Suddenly you’re stuck with a forfeit and unless you can locate the defendant you will have to pay the full amount of the bond. If the defendant does fulfill his obligations to the court, you will be required to return whatever collateral he or his cosigner gave you. If you haven’t stayed on top of your paperwork how easily will you be able to find that collateral and return it? For a bail agent, staying on top of files is not just a matter of efficiency or keeping your office clean. In many instances, it’s a requirement of the business. In all instances, it’s a practice that can save your business from disaster.
