Chapter 6: MANAGING YOUR AVAILABILITY

People are arrested all the time. If you want the job of bailing them out, you need to be available all the time – whether or not you have an office, and whether or not you are in your office when the calls come through. I have written bonds on Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day and every other holiday. In fact, I’ve written bonds every day of the year over my career. This includes vacation days. I’ve spent time on the beach in Hawaii, on vacation, negotiating bonds back in California, trying to work out details via fax and posting through my surety company. I’ve also developed a relationship with other bail agencies, so that if I get a call when I’m out of town and can’t post the bond, I can at least earn a referral fee.

It’s taxing, especially when you don’t have employees, to handle incoming calls 24-hours a day, seven days a week, but if you are going to remain competitive in this business you just have to work out some arrangement. If you are not available you will lose calls and consequently lose business. To succeed as a bail agent, you need to accept that you must be available, in one way or another, every hour of every day throughout the year.
